Individuals, organisations and businesses can now offset their carbon emissions by buying carbon offsets, also known as carbon credits.

Many people find there is only so much they can do to actually reduce the amount of carbon they use and would like to offset the amount of carbon they do use by investing in projects around the world which are designed to reduce carbon dependency or absorb carbon emissions.

What Are Carbon Offsets?

Also known as carbon credits, carbon offsetting is basically paying someone else to either absorb CO2 or reduce CO2 emissions. Carbon offsetting recognises that we all share the one atmosphere and that what is done in one part of the world affects everyone. In some respects carbon offsetting is a bit like a charitable donation with the donation going to a specified project such as a project to plant trees to absorb carbon dioxide or a clean energy project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Who Can Purchase Carbon Offsets?

Carbon offsets can be purchased by individuals who wish to offest their own emissions, for example from air travel, and by any organisation or business. Companies and other organisations can buy offsets either voluntarily or as part of meeting targets imposed by parent companies or governments.

How Are These Carbon Offset Projects Monitored and Verified?

Carbon offsets purchased through Inergy UK Ltd are managed by the Carbon Advice Group which only invests in offsets which can be independently verified to meet the highest standards. In particular we focus on projects which are able to comply with the rigorous standards set by the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism (Certifed Emissions Reductions) or other internationally recognised standards such as the Gold Standard for UN and Verified Projects or the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) .
